A pharmacy team is made up of many important roles; one of these is the pharmacy technician. Technicians work under the supervision of a pharmacist, and can work in both community and hospital pharmacies.
Pharmacy technicians assist in the daily running of the pharmacy. Their duties include assisting customers, preparing and filling prescriptions, managing inventory, and other general responsibilities.
Technician positions are a great way to build experience while pursuing your first pharmacy job. Some junior level positions will not require you to be on the register just yet, so technician roles are a good option for anyone still in college.
The best way to become a pharmacy technician is to enrol in a higher education program and obtain a Higher Certificate in Science (Pharmacy Technician). In Ireland, there are a different options for technician courses. The Institute of Technology Carlow has a great two-year program, as does Athlone Institute of Technology.
Technicians will also need skills such as attention to detail, great communication skills, critical thinking and problem solving skills, a good memory, and a desire to learn.

Locum Pharmacy Technicians
If you’re not interested in finding a permanent position, you can also work as a locum technician. This would allow you to work in different pharmacies and locations.
As a locum pharmacy technician, you will also most likely receive a higher hourly rate, depending on the pharmacy. Normally, locum technicians will receive between €15 to €20 per hour, as well as having the flexibility to choose where and when you want to work.
